As usual, so well said 👏

It's appalling. The same holds true for the Los Angeles Times. The Washington Post, the paper that blew the lid on Watergate, has destroyed its legacy. They're a disgrace.

Oddly enough, independent in this case would have meant: “we endorsed Candidate A because we are free to choose - we are independent from coercion, corruption and bribery.” Well, way to let us all know none of that is true and WaPo isn’t independent any longer. Unsubscribed today. I’m done. Your writing was stunning. Thank you.

Yea, everyone is unsubscribing from newspapers and saying to follow social media news content aggregators. How do they think that sausage gets made?

Just cancelled my very long time subscription. Democracy dies in darkness, indeed 😡

I, in a fit of impulse, unsubscribed as soon as I read the news about it. Thanks for your deeper clarity on this, I know now I did the right thing, impulse or not.

I agree with everything here! I will add that I believe, if we wish to send a message, we must also cancel our Amazon services if we have them. I cancelled Prime with a message to the company and an IG post @ Amazon and WaPo. The only way to stand up to financially motivated support of fascism is to remind the billionaires where their earnings come from. I don’t know that it will work, but I know I don’t want to be part of supporting Bezos.

Totally agree with bashing the WaPo/Bezos for this. I am stunned by how these billionaires are willing to kowtow to Trump.

The only part I disagree with is the word “allowed” in your statement: “Who could’ve seen this coming, when one of the wealthiest people in the world was allowed to acquire one of the most influential legacy papers in the country?” Large national newspapers have often been owned by smarmy businessmen, and there is some amount of duty by readers to be able to discern the motivations by said owners. As I recall, WaPo was on the verge of going out of business if Bezos hadn’t bought it. In a capitalistic country, I’m not sure we want anyone in govt (SEC, FCC, etc) deciding who should be allowed to own what.

Sadly I don’t think they’re kowtowing. I think they agree with his policies and are looking forward to benefitting from them if he is elected. Easy choice if you’re super rich

Clara, you’re marvelous and I don’t know how you do what you do, and do it so well. I read everything you write with great interest. Like your name, you bring clarity, with much wisdom and grace to your posts. Thank you!

This was a wonderful piece of writing. Right up there with Margaret Sullivan’s piece today. Thanks for being clear-eyed and also funny as hell (though not in this piece because, lord, nothing funny about this)

The absolute hypocrisy in Lewis’ statement. The gall! As you stated, a WaPo endorsement would effectively mean nothing, but it did mean that another kernel of my sanity and hope is deflated. Aw well.
