Omg THANK you for the gem of an interview with Olayemi Olurin and the most hate-able mayor! I always found the TBC morning show to be a bit vapid (back in the olden days when I still listened to the radio on my way into the city) but this interview, as you said, is real journalism!

"Every single one of us should aspire to this Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday (1940) energy. No one died and the Internet was having a mania-induced ball — that, to me, is the definition of a perfect event. "

^^this gave me such a good giggle. Couldn't agree more!

My favorite Caetano is the self-titled one he recorded after his exile to London. It got me through the quarantimes.

Listen, it has been a sh*t-with-a-capital-S kinda week, and this lovely recap, as usual, made everything just a tiny bit better, just a smidge brighter. Thank you 🙏🏻

OMG, so jealous of that Caetano Veloso concert. Probably every Brazilian who ever lived in NY was there just to see him. Desde que o samba e' samba is one of my favourite songs and completely agree the duo with Gilberto Gil is such a match made in heaven. And very disappointed to read what Shakira had to say about Barbie as 1) I have always liked her music (her real music, the one in Spanish, and also in English before all the reggeaton kicked in) and 2) I quite enjoyed Barbie. Oh well.

It definitely made me LOL several times (like a true millennial)! Ok but not trying to start sh*t but really shakira? Come on gworl—i would think she has something different to say than THAT after her recent romantic dumpster fire. I mean, was it taken out of context?? (ugh just trying to salvage what I can as I am also a stan of the queen). California is still annoying and a hot mess, at least we stop the gender reveals from turning into *natural* disasters. I’m horrible for saying this, but the memes were out 1.5 seconds after the (first!) earthquake and they killed meeee. As one put it so eloquently— a 5 in New York is a 8 everywhere else. 🙃

I have 3 boys. Having no girls, I dragged my husband and boys (15-10) to see Barbie. My husband and I loved the film. We laughed the entire time. My boys did not. When we walked out of Barbie, I asked my boys how they felt about the movie and what they thought it said about men and women. They said it made men look stupid. I explained that the way men were treated in the film was the way that women have been treated in film until very recently. That women were often portrayed as stupid and sexualized. Stereotypes they point out when watching old movies with me. And when I say old movies, I mean “Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure”. Unfortunately (or fortunately) my boys have no context for the stereotypes reversed in Barbie. It gave us a lot to talk about at dinner. They did not like the movie. (I am ashamed to say that they notice more of the weird stereotypes in 80s and 90s movies than I did when I watched them when I was their age.) So Barbie was a lot for boys to swallow if they are under the age of 18 and not well versed in film. But it was also an amazing opportunity to discuss the history of film and how the world and movies have changed. And how they can define their own role for manhood and Ken-hood.
